Michael Goulian receives Competition Series Engine

Williamsport, PA - July 14, 2006 - Lycoming Engines announced the delivery of its new Competition Series Thunderbolt Engine to Michael Goulian.

Michael Goulian, world-renowned aerobatic champion, received his Lycoming Thunderbolt Engine, an experimental performance AEIO-580. The engine was designed with configurations based on the high performance needs for Goulian's new Castrol competition aircraft, the Extra 300SHP. Representing the specialized non-certified engine capability now available through Lycoming Thunderbolt Engines, this AEIO-580 delivers the best power-to-weight ratio available in its category. The 583 cubic-inch displacement, 6-cylinder engine is based on a platform that was developed for Mike Jones, a Lycoming-sponsored Reno air racer. Goulian debuted this engine at the Red Bull Air Races in Berlin, Germany in May 2006.

"We are proud and excited to deliver this Competition Series Thunderbolt Engine to Mr. Goulian," stated Jon Delamarter, Thunderbolt manager. "We believe this engine has the potential to be a dominant player in the Red Bull Air Races and in competition aerobatics. We want our customers to understand that this engine is the most powerful, normally aspirated 6-cylinder engine Lycoming has ever offered. It is also representative of the level of developmental capability we offer every homebuilder. Thunderbolt Engines works directly with builders to develop powerplant solutions specifically engineered to their individual requirements. Lycoming is now working even closer with our end user customers and delivering customized solutions."

Launched in April 2006, Lycoming's Thunderbolt Engines provide product offerings that include engines ranging from the rugged O-235 to the legendary IO-720. Customers may choose from a variety of available fuel systems, ignition systems, and performance enhancements including component balancing, cylinder flow matching, increased compression, tuned induction, and turbo charging. Finishing options include chrome and custom colors. For further information, please contact Jon A. Delamarter: (570) 327-7115 or Jdelamarter@lycoming.textron.com.
