HR Textron delivers 200,000th Actuator to Boeing for Joint Direct Attack Munition

January 21, 2009
Valencia, CA - January 21, 2009 - HR Textron, an operating unit of Textron Systems, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, today announced the milestone delivery of its 200,000th Tail Actuation Subsystem (TAS) to The Boeing Company for integration into the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) system.

“HR Textron employees come to work every day, taking pride in building products that are absolutely critical to our armed forces and warfighters,” said HR Textron Senior Vice President and General Manager Jeff Picard. “Two hundred thousand units of production is an amazing accomplishment not just for HR Textron, but for our customer Boeing and the entire JDAM supply chain.”

JDAM is a low-cost, GPS aided guidance kit that converts existing free-fall bombs into accurately guided “smart” weapons. Adding a JDAM tail kit enables accurate weapon delivery against a vast array of targets. Utilizing its core competencies in electric motors, electro-mechanical actuation and electronics, HR Textron developed the TAS to accurately control JDAM’s aerodynamic fins that maneuver the weapon to its target.

Frank Tempesta, president of Textron Systems, stated, “Our JDAM Tail Actuation Subsystem provides critical capability to U.S. Air Force and Navy aviators and directly contributes to saving American lives in combat. It is not only the technical and production accomplishments, but also the contribution we make to our soldiers’ safety, that make this event so meaningful to Textron, our employees and our suppliers.”

HR Textron delivered its 200,000th TAS in 2008, with production having started in 1996. Forty-one suppliers from California and five other states, plus Italy, support HR Textron’s program. HR Textron is under contract for more than 10,000 additional units extending production into 2010 and expects to receive contracts for additional quantities as they become funded by the U.S. Government.
