Jacobsen Equipment Gets The Job Done At Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge

Quality of cut is the key

Charlotte, NC - November 18, 2009 - Joe Wollner has been the golf and grounds superintendent at the 27-hole Ruttger’s Bay Lake Lodge Resort, located in Brainerd, Min., for the past 10 years and he could not be happier with the Jacobsen equipment he uses on a daily basis to maintain his two golf courses. Jacobsen is a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company.

“I’ve been in this business for 25 years and I believe that the Jacobsen triplex reels are just the best,” he said. “I’m running five Greens King IV mowers here, one with verticut reels, and they are great. The finish they leave is as good as it gets.”

“I also have a Jacobsen HR-5111, which is my second one, used for keeping the rough and semi-rough in order and two Jacobsen LF-3400s built in 2000 that are still going strong on my fairways,” Wollner added. “My Jacobsen AR-3 is great on the tee surrounds where we cut to two inches and we also use it around the residential villas, which we maintain at three inches.”

“I’ve got the 18-hole Lakes course, which will provide a challenge to golfers of all abilities, and the Alec’s Nine, built in 1923 and still a great course ideal for new golfers and families,” he said. “Having the right equipment is important to me and I’ve got that with Jacobsen.”

Joe began his career at Terrace View Golf Course in Mankato, Min., back in 1984 and has worked at various courses across the North and Midwest. He has also worked in the lawn care sector and in chemical distribution, so has a rounded knowledge of the turf industry.

At Ruttger’s he has a team of 24 staff members with a variety of skills, which makes them very self-sufficient. The new 7,000 square foot maintenance facility was designed by Wollner and his team, who also completed the finishing. It includes a dedicated concrete wash down area and separate fertilizer and chemical storage.

On the Lakes course, Wollner and his team redesigned the 11th hole, which is now heavily bunkered and framed with trees. They also rebuilt the first hole, which resulted in a 19th spare hole for the course to use when maintenance or training takes one of the others temporarily out of play.

“We are a typical Minnesota golf course, cut through woodland with a lot of water features,” Wollner added. “We are proud of our reputation as the oldest family-owned course in the state and we are one of the best-maintained using quality Jacobsen equipment.”
