Jacobsen Steps Up Its Classic XP Reels with Advanced Relief Technology

February 05, 2009
Charlotte, NC - February 5, 2009 - For more than 87 years, Jacobsen, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, has been a company synonymous with the finest quality-of-cut in the turf industry. Jacobsen earned its reputation with the Classic XP cutting system, a proven design consisting of 67 points of unique reel geometry refined on golf courses around the world.

Thanks to a $1.5 million investment in new technology at the company's main manufacturing facility in Charlotte, N.C., Jacobsen Classic XP reels now feature Advanced Relief Technology (ART™) which significantly extends the life and consistent performance of each reel.

"The basic design of Jacobsen's reels is still the same as what it was 30 years ago, but this new technology is now allowing us to make reels that last longer and require less maintenance" said Britton Harold, Jacobsen product manager for parts and accessories. "This Advance Relief Technology allows us to make a reel with a higher degree of angle on each blade, allowing them to stay sharper and giving them a lifespan of up to three times longer than reels available from other manufacturers."

David Dandria, superintendent of Sunday River Golf Club in Newry, Maine, received a large shipment of new Jacobsen equipment delivered to his course in August. Dandria says he already notices a difference in his course after the first few months of running his new Jacobsen reel mowers with ART.

"Our course is set on the side of a mountain, and we have to deal with some pretty tough rolling terrain," Dandria said. "The cut we're getting out of these new reel mowers is a little truer than what we were getting before. If you went out there with a prism, I'd expect you to find that everything is just more uniform all around, and you can attribute a lot of that back to the quality-of-cut and the reels."

Similarly, Old Marsh Country Club in Wells, Maine, recently purchased several new Jacobsen greens and fairway units with Classic XP reels. Mechanic Jim Morrison explains that he is very pleased with the performance of the new reel mowers after their first two months on the job.

"We haven't been a Jacobsen course for long, but these new reel mowers have been cutting well and performing great for us," Morrison explained. "We've had these new mowers in for about two months, and we haven't had to backlap or do anything to sharpen them up yet. They are cutting good on the greens and fairways, and we've been real happy with them so far."

Jacobsen reels with Advanced Relief Technology allow for faster backlapping, create less friction during operation, and produce less heat and wear compared to products from other manufacturers. They are currently in production, and are standard on all new Jacobsen equipment.
