Greens and fairways on the Black course at Bethpage State Park prepared by Jacobsen mowers

Charlotte, NC - June 17, 2009 – The Black Course at Bethpage State Park, Farmingdale, N.Y., will host the 2009 U.S. Open Championship from June 18 through June 21. Once again Bethpage will host a major championship and Jacobsen is there supporting their effort. Jacobsen is a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company.

Director of Golf Course Maintenance Craig Currier, his top assistant Kevin Carroll and the Bethpage team will be using Jacobsen’s Eclipse™ walkers, the latest state-of-the-art hybrid mowers on the greens and SLF-1880™ light weight fairway mowers.

Mother Nature has not been kind to the New York area and Currier for preparing the course for tournament play. It has been raining since last Friday, making it difficult to prepare for the tournament. Currier stated that, “We have been able to cut the greens in the middle of the day. The Eclipse mowers are absolutely great. The quality of cut is what makes the difference. The greens will be terrific once everything dries out.”

The United States Golf Association accepted a record 9,086 entries including those from the 75 golfers who are currently fully exempt from qualifying. Through the qualifying rounds this has been reduced to a field of 156, who will be watched by a global audience, estimated at 2 billion. Among the competitors, former champions Angel Cabrera, Michael Campbell, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Retief Goosen, Geoff Ogilvy and Tiger Woods will be joined by Japanese amateur Shintaro Kai, all competing for the coveted title.

Vollie Carr, Jacobsen’s tournament/product support manager and Gary Kuhl, mobile marketing representative along with the Cushman support vehicle will be providing valuable assistance to Currier and his team. They will be there 24/7 for the tournament to ensure that everything runs just as it should. Craig Schleider, sales representative from Malvese Equipment Company, Inc., will also be on hand to provide local dealer support.

Commenting on Jacobsen’s major role in this global event, Ralph Nicotera, vice president of sales of the Charlotte-based turf equipment manufacturer said, “Jacobsen is honored to be helping the Bethpage team as they host this major event. Craig and his crew at Bethpage have done a terrific job preparing for the US Open.”
