The FI-100 is a detector that uses a non-intrusive technique to sense the presence of light/signal in fiber optic cables. When the device is clamped onto the fiber being tested, a small macrobend is induced to cause a small portion of light to spill onto the detector's diodes.
Specific fiber adapters are used so the optimum bend radii can be placed on the fiber-optic cable. This process permits the maximum sensitivity for detecting low level signals that are emitted from bend-insensitive fibers. This non-intrusive technique allows the technician to check if light is present in the cable without disconnecting a potentially critical service. The insertion loss that is induced during the test will not lead to an alarm condition or disrupt signal transmission.
